Judge Gerald Martin to take oath Dec. 23 in Raleigh Newly elected 13th District Chancery Judge Gerald M. Martin will take the oath of office in a ceremony at 2 p.m. Dec. 23 at the Chancery Court Building in Raleigh. Chancery Judge David Shoemake will administer the oath of office. Circuit Judge Eddie Bowen of Raleigh will be the keynote speaker. The 13th Chancery District includes Covington, Jefferson Davis, Lawrence, Simpson and Smith counties. Before his election in November, Martin was a partner in the law firm of Eaton & Martin, P.A., in Taylorsville. He previously served as a court appointed mediator in Circuit and Chancery courts, and as a special master in Circuit Courts. He served as attorney for the Smith County Economic Development District since 1993. He was attorney and municipal prosecutor for the town of Raleigh since 2000, and attorney for the town of Taylorsville since 2005. Judge-elect Martin has provided pro bono legal counsel to local churches, youth sports leagues and other non-profits organizations. He coaches the children’s Upward Soccer League, and is a former president of Mississippi 4-H. He is currently chairman of deacons at First Baptist Church of Raleigh. He earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Mississippi State University and a law degree from the University of Alabama School of Law. He served as student editor of the American Journal of Tax Policy at the University of Alabama. He is married to Special Assistant Attorney General Judy T. Martin. They have two sons, ages 4 and 6. They live in Raleigh. #### |
